My Improv Story
I’ve been improvising since 2008! Improv was my first true passion. When I was 12, I went to see an improv show at Hillsdale High School. The team was run by a very talented professional improv performer from San Francisco, and it showed. They were incredible. I had never seen anything like it before, and I fell in love right there in my theater seat. Improv became my first great passion. I joined that improv team when I got to high school, and learned some of the most meaningful skills and life lessons I’ve ever been taught. I was determined to take what I learned and experienced with that team wherever I went, for the rest of my life. I was also determined to find any opportunity to continue spreading the joy of improv.
When I got to college at University of California, Santa Barbara, I joined the improv team there, Improvability. For four years, I performed in weekly shows, participated in weekly practices, and got my first taste of coaching and teaching improv to newcomers. It was absolutely fantastic, largely because I had such incredible luck; I had wonderful teammates. I met the funniest, wittiest, and most supportive teammates during my time with Improvability. Together we put on fantastic shows and embarked on fantastic adventures. Perhaps our best highlight was our run in the 2015 College Improv Tournament, where a series of good shows led to a trip to Chicago; we wound up placing in the final 4, among the top-ranked teams in the nation. Surreal, massively fun improv experiences like that defined my years with my college team. I liked them so much, I stuck with them, and kept improvising with them into adulthood!
After graduating college in 2016, I moved to Los Angeles, where there are improv opportunities aplenty. I moved to create and entertain. So I figured I’d take my greatest love, cast my favorite teammates, and create an improv show for YouTube — Script Not Found. The show has been an absolute joy to make, and it truly is a passion project. After five years of directing, producing, performing, and editing the show, it’s impossible to describe just how much I’ve learned and grown. Plus, now the improv I participate in is a lot easier to show people! My bond with improv is sure to last my whole life, and I am very grateful that I am able to share my story with you. I hope you will see improv as the pure, distilled, essence of joy that I do, and I encourage you to participate in some! In the meantime, it would mean a lot to me if you watched some here:
